Suhaib Ar-Roomi (R) The Example of Sacrifice

Suhaib Ar-Roomi رضي الله عنه was one of the early converts to Islam in Makkah, and his life is full of adventure and struggle for the sake of the religion. He had been captured as a child, raised among the Romans — which is where the name Ar-Roomi comes from — and had made himself a wealthy merchant in Makkah by his own effort.

When the time came to migrate to Madinah, the pagans stopped him. They told him he had arrived in Makkah with nothing and would not leave with a fortune. Suhaib's answer was to tell them where his money was buried and ask whether they would let him go if he handed it over. They agreed, and he left with nothing but his faith.

When the Prophet ﷺ heard what he had done, he said twice: "Suhaib has profited. Suhaib has profited."

He became a great defender of Islam, and he was merciful to the poor and needy — spending all of what he later earned on meeting their needs.
