The short version

  • We collect only what we need to process your order, ship it, and support you afterward.
  • We do not sell or rent your personal information to anyone.
  • We never see or store your full credit card number — payments are handled by a certified payment processor.
  • You can access, correct, or delete your information at any time by contacting us.
  • Marketing emails are opt-in, and every one of them has an unsubscribe link.

This policy explains what information Dar-us-Salam Islamic Bookstore ("Dar-us-Salam," "we," "us") collects when you visit dar-us-salam.com, why we collect it, who we share it with, and the choices you have. It applies to our website, our phone and email orders, and our Houston retail store.

1. What information we collect

Information you give us

  • Order information: your name, billing and shipping address, email address, and phone number.
  • Payment information: your card details are entered on a secure page and passed directly to our payment processor. We receive only a confirmation, the card brand, and the last four digits.
  • Account information: if you create an account, your login email and a securely hashed password, plus your saved addresses and order history.
  • Communications: messages you send us by email, contact form, phone, or through our review system.
  • Product reviews: if you submit a review, the name you provide and your review text are published publicly on the product page.
  • Newsletter sign-ups: your name and email address, if you choose to subscribe.

Information collected automatically

  • Your IP address, browser type, device type, and operating system.
  • Pages you view, products you search for, and how you move through the site.
  • The website or advertisement that referred you to us.
  • Cookie identifiers, as described in Section 5.

What we do not collect

We do not ask for your Social Security number, and we do not knowingly collect precise location data, biometric data, or information about your religious practice beyond what is implied by the products you choose to buy. We do not build advertising profiles based on sensitive categories.

2. How we use your information

  • To fulfill your order — process payment, pick and pack your items, arrange shipping, and send order confirmations and tracking updates.
  • To provide customer service — answer questions, handle returns and exchanges, and resolve delivery problems.
  • To operate and improve the store — understand which pages and products are useful, fix errors, improve search results, and plan our catalog.
  • To protect the store — detect fraudulent orders, prevent abuse, and keep our systems secure.
  • To send you marketing — only if you have asked to receive it. See Section 6.
  • To meet legal obligations — keep tax and sales records, comply with export and customs rules, and respond to lawful requests.

3. Payment security

Every page on our site is served over an encrypted HTTPS connection. When you check out, your card details are transmitted directly to our payment processor, a PCI-DSS certified financial services provider. Dar-us-Salam does not store your full card number, expiration date, or security code on our servers. Our records show only the card brand and the last four digits, which we use to identify the transaction if you contact us about it.

If you pay using a digital wallet such as Google Pay or PayPal, your card details are handled entirely by that provider and are never transmitted to us.

If you prefer not to enter your card online, you are welcome to place your order on the site using the check or money order option and then call us at (713) 722-0419 to give your payment details by phone.

If you ever see a charge from us that you did not authorize, contact your card issuer first, following their reporting procedure, and then let us know so we can investigate on our end.

4. Who we share information with

We do not sell, rent, or trade your personal information. We have never done so and have no plans to.

To run an online store, however, we do rely on a small number of trusted service providers. Each one receives only the information needed to perform its function, and each is contractually required to protect it and use it only on our behalf:

  • Payment processing — to authorize and settle your payment and to screen for fraud.
  • Shipping carriers (USPS, UPS, DHL and similar) — your name, address, phone number, and package contents where customs forms require it.
  • Website hosting, security, and content delivery — our server host and our security provider process traffic data, including IP addresses, to keep the site online and block attacks.
  • Email delivery — to send order confirmations and, if you have subscribed, our newsletter.
  • Analytics — aggregated and pseudonymous usage statistics that help us understand how the store is used.
  • Address verification — when you type an address at checkout, the partial address may be sent to a mapping service to suggest completions. You can ignore the suggestions and type your address manually.
  • Affiliate tracking — if you arrived through one of our affiliate partners, we record that the referral led to an order so the partner can be credited. Partners see order values, not your name or address.

We may also disclose information when we are legally required to — for example in response to a subpoena, court order, tax audit, or a lawful government request — or where disclosure is necessary to protect our rights, our customers, or the public. If Dar-us-Salam is ever sold or reorganized, customer records may transfer as part of that business, and this policy would continue to apply to them.

We may publish anonymized, aggregate statistics (for example, "our best-selling title this Ramadan"), but these never identify individual customers.

5. Cookies and tracking

Cookies are small text files that a website stores in your browser. We use them in three ways:

  • Essential cookies keep the items in your shopping cart, remember your currency and language, and keep you signed in during checkout. The store cannot function without these.
  • Analytics cookies tell us how many people visit, which pages they read, and where they run into trouble. We use this to improve the site, not to identify you.
  • Preference cookies remember choices such as dismissing a notice, so we do not show it again.

Most browsers accept cookies by default, and every major browser lets you block or delete them in its settings. If you block cookies entirely, you can still browse the catalog, but the shopping cart and account features will not work correctly.

Our site honors the Global Privacy Control (GPC) browser signal where your browser sends one.

6. Email and marketing preferences

We send two kinds of email. Transactional emails — order confirmations, shipping notices, and replies to your questions — are part of fulfilling your order, and we send them whether or not you subscribe to anything.

Marketing emails — new arrivals, offers, and articles — go only to people who have asked for them. Every marketing email includes an unsubscribe link at the bottom that takes effect immediately. You can also manage your subscription from the Newsletter page or by emailing us.

Unsubscribing from marketing does not cancel your account or affect any order in progress.

7. Your privacy rights and choices

You can update most of your information yourself: sign in and open My Account to change your name, email, password, or saved addresses.

Beyond that, and regardless of where you live, we will honor requests to:

  • Access — get a copy of the personal information we hold about you.
  • Correct — fix information that is wrong or out of date.
  • Delete — remove your account and personal information, subject to records we are legally required to keep.
  • Port — receive your information in a portable, machine-readable format.
  • Opt out — stop receiving marketing, and opt out of targeted advertising and any sale of personal data. (We do not sell personal data, so there is nothing to opt out of on that front.)

To make a request, email [email protected] with "Privacy Request" in the subject line, or call (713) 722-0419. We will verify your identity — usually by confirming details of a past order — and respond within 45 days. There is no charge, and exercising these rights will never affect the price or service you receive from us.

If we decline a request, we will explain why, and you may ask us to reconsider by replying to our response. Texas residents who remain unsatisfied may file a complaint with the Office of the Texas Attorney General.

Some records must be kept even after a deletion request — for example, invoices and sales-tax records that federal and Texas law require us to retain. We will delete everything else and tell you what was kept and why.

8. Children's privacy

We sell a great many books for children, but our store is intended for use by adults. We do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 13, and accounts and orders must be created by a parent or guardian. If you believe a child has given us personal information, please contact us and we will delete it promptly.

9. How long we keep your information

We keep order and invoice records for as long as tax, accounting, and consumer-protection rules require. Account information is kept while your account is active and for a reasonable period afterward, so that we can help you with a past order. Newsletter subscriptions are kept until you unsubscribe. Server and security logs are kept for a short period and then rotated out.

10. How we protect your information

We use industry-standard safeguards: TLS encryption on every page, a web application firewall, hardened server configuration, restricted staff access on a need-to-know basis, hashed passwords, and regular backups and software updates.

No system connected to the internet can be guaranteed completely secure, and we will not pretend otherwise. What we can promise is that we keep the amount of data we hold to a minimum, that we do not store card numbers, and that if a breach ever affected your information, we would notify you as required by law.

Please help us by choosing a strong, unique password for your account and by not sharing it.

11. Links to other websites

Our site, blog, and newsletters sometimes link to other websites — publishers, Islamic organizations, and reference material. Once you follow such a link, you are on someone else's site and subject to their privacy practices, not ours. We choose the sites we link to carefully, but we cannot control or take responsibility for how they handle your information. We encourage you to read the privacy policy of any site before giving it personal details.

12. International customers

Dar-us-Salam operates from Houston, Texas, and our servers are located in the United States. If you order from outside the U.S., your information will be transferred to and processed in the United States, where privacy laws may differ from those in your country. By placing an order, you consent to that transfer. Customers in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom, and Canada may exercise the rights available under their local law by contacting us at the address below, and we will treat those requests the same way we treat any other privacy request.

13. Changes to this policy

We update this policy when our practices change or when the law requires it. The revision date appears at the top of the page. If a change materially affects how we use your information, we will say so clearly on this page and, where appropriate, notify subscribers by email. Continuing to use the site after a change means you accept the updated policy.

14. How to contact us

Questions about this policy, or about the information we hold on you, are always welcome.
