To err is human. We fall into sins and mistakes through the ordinary business of a day — some we are aware of and find hard to avoid, and some we commit without ever realizing.

That second category is the one this book opens with, and it is the one children have never considered.

Why It Matters

Because good deeds can be undone. The good acts we perform are nullified by certain kinds of sin and mistake, which means the only way to protect what we have built is to ask Allah for forgiveness.

For a child who thinks of good deeds as accumulating in a fixed pile, that is a genuinely new idea, and it explains why istighfar is a daily habit rather than an emergency measure.

The Part That Reassures

The book is careful to balance it. Nobody enters Paradise on account of his good deeds alone, unless Allah bestows His mercy on him — because Allah's blessings and favors upon us are so numerous that we could never thank Him or worship enough to match them.

So it is another blessing on top of all of them that He forgives us. A child who takes that in has learned something about Allah rather than only something about rules.
