Hajj is one of the few acts of worship a Muslim performs without ever having practiced it. He learns it in advance, then performs it once, in a crowd of millions, in unfamiliar terrain, on a fixed schedule that does not wait for him. A guide that is clear and physically present matters more here than almost anywhere else.

This is that guide: compiled by the Dar-us-Salam Research Division from the Qur'an and the authentic Sunnah, and sized at 3.3 x 4.7 inches so it travels in a pocket rather than a suitcase.

In the Order You Will Need It

The rites are presented chronologically rather than by legal category, which is the right arrangement for a book used during the journey. Before departure, during the rites, and after completing them — each in sequence:

  • Ihram and the intention (niyyah), and where it is entered
  • Talbiyah — its wording and when to raise the voice with it
  • Tawaf around the Ka'bah and Sa'i between Safa and Marwah
  • Standing at 'Arafah, the night at Muzdalifah, and the days at Mina
  • Stoning the Jamarat, the sacrifice where applicable, and shaving or shortening
  • Tawaf al-Ifadah and the farewell tawaf

The essential du'as are given in place, so the pilgrim is not searching for the right supplication at the moment he needs to say it.

Ziyaarah in Madinah

The visit to Al-Masjid An-Nabawi is covered on its own terms: the etiquette of the visit, giving salam to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, visiting Jannat al-Baqi', and the practices that have attached themselves to the visit without basis in the Sunnah.

Avoiding the Common Mistakes

Alongside each rite the guide notes the errors pilgrims most often fall into — usually by copying whoever is standing nearby. Since it works from authentic evidence throughout, the difference between what is legislated and what is merely widespread stays visible.
