How The Prophet Muhammad (S) Performed Hajj

كيف أدى النبي محمد (ص) فريضة الحج

Shaykh Abdul Aziz bin Abdullah bin Baz describes the Hajj of the Prophet ﷺ as the authentic narrations record it — from ihram through tawaf, sa'i, Arafah, Muzdalifah, the Jamarat and the farewell tawaf, with the supplications he recited at each stage. The Prophet ﷺ performed Hajj once, and he said of it: "Take from me your rites." That single pilgrimage is therefore the standard against which every Hajj afterwards is measured — which makes describing it accurately the most useful thing a guide can do.

That is what Shaykh Abdul Aziz bin Abdullah bin Baz (رحمه الله), the late Grand Mufti of Saudi Arabia, does here. Rather than organizing the book by legal category, he follows the Prophet ﷺ through his Hajj in order, from the moment of ihram to the farewell tawaf.

The Pilgrimage in Sequence

  • Ihram and intention — where he entered it and what he said
  • Talbiyah — its wording and when he raised his voice with it
  • Tawaf al-Qudum — the arrival circuit and how he performed it
  • Sa'i — between Safa and Marwah, with the supplications he made at each
  • The 8th of Dhul-Hijjah — departure to Mina and the prayers there
  • Arafah — the standing, the sermon, and the dua of the greatest day of the year
  • Muzdalifah — the night halt and the prayer at dawn
  • The Jamarat — the stoning across the days of Tashriq
  • Sacrifice, shaving and Tawaf al-Ifadah — and the order in which he performed them
  • Tawaf al-Wada' — the farewell circuit before departure

Throughout, the supplications the Prophet ﷺ recited are given in their place, so the pilgrim reads what to say at the moment he needs to say it rather than hunting for it separately.

Following the Sunnah, Not the Crowd

Much of what pilgrims do in Makkah is copied from the people around them, and a good deal of it has no basis in the Sunnah. Because this guide keeps to the authenticated narrations, the difference becomes visible on its own: what the Prophet ﷺ did is described, and practices that came later are not smuggled in beside it.

Who It Is For

Anyone preparing for Hajj — first-timers especially, but also returning pilgrims who suspect they have been doing something out of habit rather than evidence. Group leaders and Hajj teachers use it as the base text for pre-departure classes. Short enough to carry and reread on the journey itself.
