The Two Requirements
The religion of Islam highlighted and guided people's attention to beneficial sciences and whatever else was useful until the Day of Resurrection. It is clear that modern sciences will be more harmful than beneficial if not based on religion. To capture this notion, however, two requirements must be fulfilled:
- Learning the teachings of the Qur'an and the Sunnah, in general and in detail
- Developing the necessary knowledge of scientific facts recognized by unprejudiced rational people
Whenever anybody has a good grasp of both requirements, he will instantly realize that anything good and reformative is accommodated within the Islamic sciences, practices and arts — so much so that they become synonymous with each other.
Why Both Requirements, Not One
Because failing either produces a familiar and unhelpful result. Someone with religious learning and no scientific literacy makes claims about science he cannot support. Someone with scientific training and no grounding in the Qur'an and Sunnah assumes a conflict exists where none does.
As-Sa'di's insistence on both is what distinguishes this from the looser "scientific miracles" genre it is often shelved beside.
Its Author
Shaykh As-Sa'di (1307–1376 AH) was among the most respected scholars of his era and the teacher of Shaykh Ibn Al-'Uthaymin, known throughout everything he wrote for clarity and accessibility.
