Tafheem-ul-Qur'an (تفہیم القرآن) is the monumental six-volume Urdu translation and commentary of the Noble Qur'an by Sayyid Abul A'la Maududi. Presenting the Arabic text alongside a clear Urdu translation and a running commentary, it is one of the most widely read and influential Qur'anic works of the modern era — a labour that occupied its author for some thirty years, from 1942 until its completion in 1972.
What sets Tafheem-ul-Qur'an apart is the accessibility of its language and the care with which it opens up the message of each Surah. Every chapter is preceded by a detailed introduction (dibacha) outlining its period and place of revelation, its historical background, and its central themes, so that the reader grasps not only what the verses say but why and when they were revealed. Throughout, the meaning of the Qur'an is explained in light of the Sunnah and the occasions of revelation (asbab an-nuzul), while connecting its timeless guidance to questions of belief, worship, society, law, history, and economics. This 6-volume set is presented in a durable hardback binding with premium gold-edged pages — a lasting reference for the home, masjid, and madrasah, now in its 99th edition.
Readers who would like Maulana Maududi's Urdu rendering of the Qur'an on its own may prefer Tarjuma Quran Majeed by Molana Maududi, while those seeking a word-for-word study aid can explore Al-Qur'an Al-Kareem Lafz ba Lafz Urdu Tarjuma. For further study, Dar-us-Salam also carries other landmark Urdu tafaseer, including Urdu: Tafsir Ibn Kathir (6 Vol.), Urdu: Tafsir As-Sa'di (3 Vols.), and Urdu: Taiseer-ul-Quran (4 Vol. Set). English-speaking readers can find the companion English edition, Towards Understanding the Qur'an.
Sayyid Abul A'la Maududi (1903–1979) was among the most influential Muslim writers and thinkers of the twentieth century in the Indian subcontinent. A journalist, scholar, and remarkably prolific author, he wrote extensively on Qur'anic exegesis, hadith, jurisprudence, history, and the concerns of contemporary Muslim life. His crowning work, Tafheem-ul-Qur'an, has been translated into numerous languages and continues to be studied by readers across the Muslim world.
