You remember a phrase and cannot place it. You want every verse in which a particular word appears. You are checking whether a term is used consistently across the Qur'an, or whether its sense shifts with context.

How It Works
Every word of the Qur'an is listed under its root, in Arabic alphabetical order, with every verse in which that root occurs given by surah and ayah. Arabic morphology makes this arrangement enormously powerful: words that look unrelated in translation share a root and sit together on the page, so a pattern becomes visible that no translation reveals.
Why It Is Indispensable
Serious study of the Qur'an is largely the study of how it uses its own vocabulary. A concordance is what makes that possible — it turns a question about usage into something a person can actually check rather than assert.
It is also the fastest way to locate a half-remembered verse, which is a more common need than any scholarly one.
