Tafsir Al-Jalalayn — the Tafsir of the Two Jalals — has been a cornerstone of traditional Islamic education across the Muslim world for five centuries, and it is very likely the most widely taught Qur'anic commentary ever written.
Its Two Authors
Imam Jalal ad-Din Al-Mahalli began it and died having completed part of it. His student, Imam Jalal ad-Din As-Suyuti, finished the remainder in the same style — so successfully that readers cannot easily tell where one ends and the other begins.
Why It Is Taught Everywhere
Concision. The commentary sits verse by verse and explains only what needs explaining: a pronoun's referent, an unfamiliar word, the sense of an ellipsis, the occasion of revelation where it decides the meaning. It never becomes a treatise.
That makes it the tafsir a student reads alongside the Qur'an rather than instead of it — short enough to consult while reciting, and precise enough to settle what a passage actually says. Longer commentaries do more; none is easier to keep beside a mushaf.
