What It Is Really About

Not the battle. The book's subject is the obligation Muslims held toward one another — the assumption that captives are not written off, that a community owes its members a rescue, and that a Sultan's authority exists partly to discharge that debt.

The detail that stays with most young readers is the nine-year-old who stood ready to lay down his life. A child reading about a child makes a different calculation than he does reading about a general.

How It Is Written

Sami Ayoub writes narrative history for young readers, and his method here is to make a distant century feel immediate through accessible language rather than through simplification. The history is not softened; it is told at a level a young reader can enter.
