The first murder in human history was committed by a brother, over an offering that was accepted from one and not the other. The Qur'an tells it plainly, and it has been a lesson ever since.

What the Book Does With It

It shows children how hateful and how great a sin murder is, and what severe punishment is prescribed for it. That is the surface of the story, and the part a child expects.

The more useful work is underneath: the book identifies the root cause of the crime and suggests ways to avoid it. The murder did not begin with a murder. It began with envy — one brother unable to accept that something was accepted from the other — and it grew from there while nobody stopped it.

Why a Child Should Have This Early

Because envy toward a sibling is universal and rarely named. A child who is shown where it can lead, in a story about two brothers, recognizes something in himself that no direct conversation would have surfaced.

The book is explicit that this is its purpose: the story contains a good lesson for the proper building of a child's mind and character.
