The first murder in human history was committed by a brother, over an offering that was accepted from one and not the other. The Qur'an tells it plainly, and it has been a lesson ever since.

Because envy toward a sibling is universal and rarely named. A child who is shown where it can lead, in a story about two brothers, recognizes something in himself that no direct conversation would have surfaced.
