The book opens with a claim strong enough to be worth testing: Allah has not blessed anyone, after Islam itself, with a blessing greater than truthfulness and kindness — and He has never tried a person with anything worse than lying and envy.

Why Those Four Together

Because they pair off. Truthfulness is what envy corrodes first: an envious person cannot describe honestly what someone else has done well. And kindness is what lying makes impossible, since a relationship where one party is inventing cannot be a kind one.

Treating them as two pairs rather than four separate faults is what makes this book more useful than a list of vices.

What Is Covered

All the forms lying and envy take — and there are more of each than a child expects. Lying by exaggeration, by omission, by silence when a correction is owed. Envy that presents itself as fairness, or as criticism, or as concern.

The teachings of Islam are set out on each form, along with how to cope with them in day-to-day activities, which is the part that turns recognition into something a child can act on.
