Islam is a religion for all creatures. Its teaching is that a Muslim is kind to everything Allah created, and animals are not an afterthought in that — the texts on them are specific and, to most readers, surprisingly firm.

What Children Learn Here

A simple account of how a Muslim child can increase in kindness toward animals: how to treat a pet, a working animal, a bird, an insect. What is forbidden — overburdening, striking the face, using a living creature as a target, confining an animal without food or water.

And the two narrations that between them settle the matter for a child: the woman punished for shutting a cat away until it died, and the man forgiven for climbing into a well to bring water to a thirsty dog.

About the Translation

The book was compiled in Arabic by Majdee Fathee As-Sayyid, an author of children's books, and translated by Aqeel Walker — keeping the original author's intent while putting it in a modern English a child in the West reads naturally. That distinction matters in translated children's books, where a literal rendering usually reads as stilted.
