Memories of Repentant People | True Accounts of Return

Memories of Repentant People

ذكريات التوابين

Allah loves those who sincerely seek His forgiveness and want to live a life of obedience. This book gives detailed, illuminating examples from the lives of the righteous predecessors and of ordinary Muslims — how they turned back to their Lord after going astray. An essential guide for anyone wanting to return to the straight path.

Allah loves those who sincerely seek His forgiveness and want to live a life of obedience. That sentence contains the whole argument of this book, and it is worth reading slowly, because most people in the state it describes assume the opposite.

Two Kinds of Example

The book draws from the righteous predecessors — the Salaf, whose accounts carry authority and whose turning back was often dramatic.

And from ordinary Muslims. That second category is why the book works. A reader can admire a Companion without ever believing the same door is open to him. An ordinary person, with an ordinary life and ordinary failings, who returned — that is harder to dismiss.

What Stops People

Almost nobody who has gone astray is unaware of it, and almost nobody needs to be told that repentance is obligatory. What stops them is a private conviction that their own case is different: too far, too long, too many times already.

Accounts of other people answer that in a way no exhortation can, because they are not arguments. They are records of what happened, and the pattern in them is consistent: Allah accepted.

Who It Is For

Anyone who has drifted and does not know how to come back. Anyone whose repentance keeps failing and who has concluded there is no point. Imams, counselors and family members who want something to hand over rather than a speech to give. Youth groups. Short and inexpensive, which is how it usually travels — passed quietly from one person to another.
