Where Al-Bukhari and Muslim selected for authenticity above all, Imam Abu Dawood gathered the hadith bearing on legal rulings — the narrations from which Islamic jurisprudence is derived. That focus made his collection a foundational reference for fiqh rather than for hadith study alone.

It is the collection a student of fiqh reaches for first among the four Sunan, and it has not been displaced in the twelve centuries since.
