Three volumes allow the subject to be built properly: the points of articulation and the characteristics of the letters first, then the rules that follow from them, then the finer material on madd, waqf and the recitation of particular words. Nothing appears before what it depends on.
Most English tajweed books cover the popular rules — idgham, ikhfa, qalqalah — and stop. A student who has worked through all three parts of this has studied what a student in an Arabic-language program studies.
That is the distinguishing feature. Material translated from Arabic assumes the reader already hears the distinctions being described. This course was written for someone who cannot yet tell ط from ت by ear, and starts further back accordingly.
