Two things stand between an English-speaking Muslim and correct recitation, and this book addresses both in order.

The Letters First

Arabic contains sounds that English does not, produced at points in the mouth and throat that an English speaker has never used deliberately. Several pairs of letters sound identical to an untrained ear and are entirely distinct in meaning — and the difference between them can change a word in the Qur'an into a different word.

The book begins here, guiding the reader to pronounce each letter from its correct point of articulation. That is the foundation, and no amount of tajweed rules will fix a recitation built on the wrong sounds.

Then the Rules

From there it moves to reciting the Qur'an according to the laws and principles of the art of recitation and intonation — the rules governing lengthening, merging, nasalization, stopping and the rest.

Written for the West Specifically

The author is direct about the problem. Correct pronunciation of the Arabic letters is more difficult for people living in the West than for those in the East, where the sounds are at least present in the surrounding languages. Western learners therefore need more effort, and different help, to solve it.

This book was written to do that job conveniently rather than to restate a curriculum designed for students who already had half the sounds.

Who It Is For

New Muslims and converts learning to recite. Second-generation Muslims raised outside Arabic-speaking countries who learned by imitation and suspect they learned it wrong. Parents teaching children. Anyone who has memorized surahs without ever being corrected.
