Bukhoor or bakhoor is the Arabic name for scented bricks made from traditional ingredients — mainly oudh woodchips (agarwood or aloeswood) soaked in fragrant oils and blended with resin, ambergris, musk, sandalwood and essential oils.
The chips are burned over charcoal or in an incense burner, and the rich smoke perfumes both the house and clothing. It is used particularly on special occasions, Fridays, Eid, and when guests are expected.
Two reasons. The blend is a higher grade, with more oud and a longer-lasting fragrance. And the decorative box makes it a gift you can hand over as it is — which the plain packs are not.
It is a common gift among Gulf families for exactly that reason, and it suits an occasion where you want something recognizably Islamic without buying decor.
