Children are taught what to worship. They are much less often taught what worship is, which is the knowledge that lets a person recognize shirk when he meets it in a form he was not warned about.

This workbook covers the four principles that make that possible.

Why the Companion Volume Matters

The three fundamental principles establish what a Muslim believes. These four establish what undermines it — and the second half is the one that gets left out, on the assumption that a child who knows the right answer will not need the wrong ones explained.

In practice the opposite holds. A child who has never had shirk described to him has no way of identifying it, and the forms he is most likely to encounter are the ones nobody labels.
