To adorn oneself with beautiful etiquette, noble manners, good behavior and pious conduct are distinguishing characteristics of the people of Islam. And knowledge — the most precious pearl in the crown of the purified Shari'ah — cannot be attained except by those who adorn themselves with its etiquette and leave the evil qualities associated with abandoning it.

For this reason the scholars devoted their attention to this etiquette, outlined its importance, and wrote books solely on the subject.

The Claim Being Made

It is stronger than it first appears. The scholars did not say that good manners improve a student's learning; they said knowledge is not attained without them.

That was understood in two senses. Practically — a student who is arrogant, impatient or disrespectful of his teacher will not be taught properly and will not persist. And in a deeper sense — that knowledge of the religion is a light Allah places in the heart, and that a heart occupied with arrogance or bad conduct is not a vessel for it.

What the Etiquette Involves

Sincerity of intention. Humility before a teacher and before the material. Acting on what has been learned before seeking more. Not speaking without knowledge. Guarding the tongue about scholars one disagrees with. And patience — because the subject is long and the student who wants results quickly abandons it.

Who It Is For

Anyone beginning serious study, and anyone who has been at it long enough to have developed the characteristic faults. This is a book that should be read at the start and again a few years in.

The first step to acquiring knowledge and learning the etiquettes of seeking knowledge. Masha-Allah you can read through this book in one sitting Insha-Allah. Like most books it goes through issues that you would not expect a book like this to go through such as how your dress effects your studying etc. These types of books help clear misconceptions and help point out flaws in yourself that maybe you haven't given a second thought about before.

Excellent primer for people who wish to begin studying anything. No matter your specialization or interests, this book is a guide for all seekers. A fantastic starting point. I found it better to read over a period of time because applying all its advices is not feasible in a sitting.

As salamu alaikum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh brothers and sisters- Alhumdulillah, this book is fantastic. This was the first book I read before getting deeper into Islamic studies and research. I found it very, very helpful. This is a definite 'must-have.' It goes into how to be humble, how to take notes, how to talk to a sheikh, how to memorize, and a lot more. The book gives very good information, but it doesn't get so in depth that you will lose concentration, get bored, and put the book down. The book is short but concise, giving you exactly what you need to have the basis to be successful in Islamic studies inshaAllah. I, very highly recommend this book to all brothers and sisters who are beginners to intermediate level in Islamic studies who want to build a solid foundation on HOW to seek knowledge before getting too deep into Islamic studies. Don't go into Islamic studies blindly [without this book]. Get this book. You will like it inshaAllah. -Hope this helps inshaAllah :]
