The Fitnah of the Dajjal and Gog & Magog

Imam As-Sa'di said:

The fact that the time in which he will come is unknown indicates that no believer can guarantee safety for himself from encountering that time. This is an affair which is possible, and its evil and fitnah are to be feared. The need of the servant for protection from his fitnah, by all means, is something known. And from the greatest means is seeking refuge with Allah from him.

Why the Uncertainty Itself Is the Point

Because it is precisely what makes ongoing vigilance necessary rather than optional. A trial with a known date could be prepared for at leisure; one that could arrive at any time requires that the means of protection — knowledge of the signs, seeking refuge in prayer, memorization of Surah Al-Kahf — be maintained continuously rather than taken up only when it seems relevant.
