Life is a Fading Shadow

الدنيا ظل زائل

"O son of Adam! Life is only days, so when your day passes, your life becomes shorter." A short booklet on the brevity of this world, told through the sayings of 'Ali, Al-Hasan Al-Basri and the Salaf — who understood that this life is a passageway, not a destination.

Everyone knows this life is short. Almost nobody lives as though they knew it. That gap between what a person believes and how he spends his hours is the subject of this booklet, and it addresses it the way the Salaf did — not with argument, but with statements sharp enough to leave a mark.

What They Said

'Ali رضي الله عنه described this world in a single line: its permitted things lead to being called to account, and its forbidden things lead to the Fire.

Al-Hasan said: O son of Adam! Life is only days, so when your day passes, your life becomes shorter.

Al-Hasan Al-Basri said he was amazed at people who had been ordered to take provision, and told the journey would begin shortly — and who spent the interval playing.

The Point Being Made

This world is a passageway. Not evil, not to be abandoned, but not the destination either — and the error the Salaf kept warning against is not enjoying it but mistaking it for the place you are going.

Read that way, ordinary decisions come into focus. What is being built here, and what is being carried forward? A person who takes the booklet seriously usually finds his own answer uncomfortable, which is the intended effect.

Why Sayings Rather Than a Treatise

These men are quoted rather than summarised because compression is the point. A sentence you can carry through a working day does more than a chapter you agreed with and forgot. The booklet is short, quotable, and better read a page at a time than straight through.

Who It Is For

Anyone whose priorities have drifted without their noticing. Readers going through loss, illness or upheaval — it is steadying rather than bleak. Khutbah and halaqah material. Ramadan reading. And for anyone whose ambitions have quietly become the whole picture.
