The Authentic Musnad of Reasons for the Descending of Revelation (المسند الصحيح في أسباب نزول الوحي) is a major scholarly work on Asbaab an-Nuzool — the occasions and circumstances surrounding the revelation of the verses of the Noble Qur’an. As Shaikh Muqbil (rahimahullah) explains, knowing why a verse was revealed is a key that unlocks its meaning; indeed, some verses remained difficult for the Companions and those after them to fully grasp until the reason for their revelation became clear. This branch of knowledge is therefore indispensable for anyone who wishes to understand the Book of Allah as it was understood by the first and best generations.
What distinguishes this volume from earlier compilations on the subject is captured in its very title: it is both authentic (sahih) and musnad. Many classical works on the reasons for revelation gather narrations indiscriminately, weaving together sound, weak, and even fabricated reports. Shaikh Muqbil ibn Haadi Al-Waadi’ee, a master of the science of hadith, applied the rigorous standards of the muhaddithoon to this material — sifting the narrations, verifying their chains of transmission, and presenting only those that are established as authentic. The result is a trustworthy, evidence-based reference that allows the reader to study the occasions of revelation with confidence, free from the doubtful and unreliable.
Arranged in the order of the Qur’an and supported throughout by referenced, authenticated reports, this 453-page edition is a valuable companion to any study of Tafseer and the Qur’anic sciences. Students of knowledge, du’aat, and serious readers alike will find it deepens their understanding of why and how Allah’s guidance was sent down in response to real events in the life of the Prophet (ﷺ) and his Companions. Translated into clear English by Abdullah MacPhee, it sits naturally alongside foundational hadith references such as Bulugh Al-Maram and complements the companion title A Collection of Authentic Invocations from the same trusted series.
About the Author
Shaikh Muqbil ibn Haadi Al-Waadi’ee (rahimahullah, d. 1422 AH / 2001 CE) was among the most prominent scholars of hadith of his time. A Yemeni by origin, he devoted himself to the study of the Prophetic narrations and their sciences, and founded the renowned Daar al-Hadith institute in Dammaj, Yemen, where students from across the world gathered to learn. He authored more than forty works, the majority of them concerned with the verification and classification of hadith — among them his celebrated collections of authentic narrations not found in the two Sahihs and his compilation of the authentic proofs of Prophethood.
His scholarship was marked by a careful, methodical commitment to sound evidence and the methodology of the Salaf, and this book is a clear example of that approach applied to the field of Asbaab an-Nuzool. May Allah have mercy upon him, reward him for his service to the Sunnah, and benefit the Ummah through his works. Aameen.
