Ali ibn Abi Talib (2 Vol. Set) by Dr. Ali Muhammad Sallabi is a sweeping, meticulously researched two-volume hardback biography that traces the life, character, and caliphate of the Leader of the Believers, ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib (may Allah be pleased with him). Spanning some 1,322 pages, this set offers a chronological narrative from his noble birth and early acceptance of Islam, through his life in Makkah and the migration (Hijrah) to Madīnah, to his active role alongside the Prophet ﷺ in campaigns and teaching, and finally to the trials, governance, and tragic martyrdom of his caliphate. The author writes with a careful Ahlus-Sunnah outlook: relying on authenticated reports, spotlighting the Prophet’s household’s virtues, and responding to later distortions—making the work both devotional and scholarly.

Dr. Sallabi examines ʿAlī’s spiritual qualities, jurisprudential insight, and leadership style, then places them in the political and social context of the Rashidun era. The books give detailed accounts of the major events that shaped his life and legacy, including his acceptance of Islam, his contributions in the early Muslim community, the circumstances surrounding his pledge of allegiance, his governance as Caliph, and the internal trials that erupted—most notably the Battle of the Camel and the Battle of Ṣiffīn—and the complex relationship with Muʿāwiyah. The narrative also dedicates careful pages to clarify misconceptions propagated by deviant narratives, offering documented rebuttals and source-based corrections for students and readers seeking a historically grounded perspective.

Beyond pure chronology, the set is strong on analysis: it explains the political causes and consequences of key episodes, assesses military campaigns and administrative decisions, and extracts ethical and spiritual lessons from ʿAlī’s behavior—his humility, courage, knowledge, and dedication to justice. The presentation is suitable for both serious students of Seerah and academics: it is a reference for sermon preparation, classroom study, scholarly research, and personal edification. Physically, the two-volume hardback is reader-friendly (6 x 8.5 in), durable, and arranged to facilitate study and repeated consultation.

Who will benefit: seekers of authentic Seerah and early Islamic history, students of hadith and sirah, imams and teachers preparing lessons, researchers studying the Rashidun period, and any Muslim wishing to deepen love for the Ahl al-Bayt while understanding the factual record and avoiding polemical exaggeration.

This is the fourth book in a study of the reign of the Rightly Guided Caliphs. It relates the life of the Leader of the Believers, 'Ali, may Allah be pleased with him, from birth until his martyrdom.

The book relates in detail how he came to Islam, his most important actions in Makkah, his migration to Madinah, his life in Madinah, his campaigns and battles alongside the Messenger of Allah, his life during the era of the Rightly Guided Caliphs, his swearing of allegiance, and his period of Caliphate.

It also discusses the internal problems that 'Ali faced during his reign. It goes on to mention the events that led to the Battle of the Camel, and how all the parties involved are free from any fault. Afterwards, the events of the Battle of Siffeen are mentioned, along with the relationship between 'Ali and Mu'aawiyah. The book sheds light on the fallacies that are held by some deviant groups about these events and their distortion of historical truths.

This is an excellent biography of Ali. What I really like about the author is how he focuses on authentic sources and also refutes many of the fabrications that have been made. I wish he also had books for the periods after Ali.
