Born in Damascus into a family devoted to Islamic learning, Ibn Al-Qayyim showed an extraordinary appetite for knowledge from a young age. His life changed when he became the close student and companion of Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah, remaining with him for many years — including in prison, where the two were held together.

Through that companionship and his own decades of work, he became a foremost authority in Tafsir, Hadith, Fiqh, Aqidah, spirituality and Islamic ethics.

What distinguishes him from his teacher, and explains his enormous later readership, is the balance. Ibn Al-Qayyim combined rigorous legal scholarship with a sustained concern for the state of the heart — sincerity, reliance, patience, love and fear of Allah — treated with the same precision he brought to a point of law. Very few scholars have done both well.

His works remain among the most widely read in the Islamic library, and readers who know him through Zad Al-Ma'ad or Madarij As-Salikin will find here the life that produced them.

Why Read a Scholar's Life

Knowledge does not transmit itself. It reaches us through particular people who paid a price to preserve it, and seeing how one of them actually lived changes how a reader treats what he inherited. These biographies deliberately cover not only scholarly contribution but the private side — manners, piety and worship — because those are the qualities that made the scholarship trustworthy.

The Biography of the Imams Series
