.webp)
When it comes to your future, it is only Allah who knows what lies ahead, as He is All-Knowing and All-Powerful. So whenever you feel uncertain about a decision in life, you can turn to Allah for guidance by performing the Istikhara prayer.
Whether you want to pick a career path, move forward with a marriage proposal, buy a new house, or settle any other matter, no one can offer you as sincere a direction as Allah can. All you need to do is put your trust in Him and follow His guidance toward the outcome that is best for you.
If you have decided to consult Allah Almighty about a matter, you should know how to perform Salat-ul-Istikhara correctly. Keep reading to learn the full procedure step by step, along with the authentic dua Istikhara in Arabic, transliteration, and English.
What is Istikhara?
Istikhara (also commonly spelled Istekhara or Estikhara) means ‘to seek goodness’ from Allah. It refers to a dua that you recite after a short prayer, expressing your complete trust in Allah. You ask Him for His infinite wisdom regarding any uncertainty in life, hoping He will guide you to the best path — through your feelings, your circumstances, or signs that make the right choice clear.
Istikhara is a sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad (SAW), who taught his companions to seek counsel from Allah in every matter of life.
In a narration, he said: “Among the happiness of the son of Adam is the abundance of performing Istikhara (seeking the best) from Allah the Exalted, and his contentment with what Allah has ordained for him. And among the misery of the son of Adam is his neglect of Istikhara to Allah the Exalted, and his resentment of what Allah has ordained for him.” (Sunan At-Tirmidhi)

Now that you understand what Istikhara is, let’s walk through the procedure. It is very simple to perform, but you must do it with sincere intention. Here are the steps to follow:
Perform Wudu
First, perform wudu, the ritual washing before prayer. It ensures you are physically clean and spiritually prepared to stand before Allah, the Most Compassionate.Set Your Intention
After wudu, set a clear intention for your Istikhara prayer. Focus your heart and mind on asking for Allah’s guidance about the specific matter at hand, and be genuinely open to His decision — ready to follow it even if it is not what you initially wanted.Pray Two Rakah
Offer two Rakat of voluntary (nafl) prayer in a quiet place. In the first Rakah, it is preferable to recite Surah Al-Kafirun after Surah Al-Fatiha. In the second Rakah, recite Surah Al-Ikhlas after Al-Fatiha, then say the Tasleem.Say Salam and Recite the Dua for Istikhara
After the Salam, raise both hands, praise Allah by His beautiful names, and send salutations upon the Prophet (SAW). Then recite the authentic dua for Istikhara recorded in Sahih Al-Bukhari.
Allahumma in kunta ta’lamu anna hadhal-amra [name your need here] khayrun li fi dini wa ma’ashi wa ‘aqibati amri, faqdurhu li wa yassirhu li thumma barik li fihi. Wa in kunta ta’lamu anna hadhal-amra sharrun li fi dini wa ma’ashi wa ‘aqibati amri, fasrifhu ‘anni wasrifni ‘anhu, waqdur liyal-khayra haythu kana thumma ardini bihi.”
Translation: “O Allah, I seek Your guidance through Your knowledge, and I seek strength through Your power, and I ask You from Your immense bounty. For You have power while I have none, and You know while I do not, and You are the Knower of all that is hidden. O Allah, if You know that this matter — [here, name your need] — is good for me in my religion, my livelihood, and the outcome of my affairs, then decree it for me, make it easy for me, and bless it for me. But if You know that this matter is bad for me in my religion, my livelihood, and the outcome of my affairs, then turn it away from me and turn me away from it, and decree for me what is good wherever it may be, and then make me content with it.”
Make Your Personal Dua
After reciting the above supplication, ask Allah for His guidance in your own words and language too. Place your concerns before Him wholeheartedly, then leave the matter entirely to Him without fear.Repeat as Needed
You may continue performing Istikhara until you feel clarity. Sometimes the answer comes within a day; other times it takes longer. The timing is in Allah’s hands, so remain patient until He guides you.
Best Time for Istikhara Prayer

You can offer Salat-ul-Istikhara at any time of the day or night, except during the forbidden hours when all voluntary prayers are prohibited. These are:
- After the Fajr prayer, until sunrise.
- When the sun is at its zenith (a few minutes before Zuhr).
- After the Asr prayer, until sunset.
There is a hadith reported by Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) in which the Messenger of Allah (SAW) said: “Do not intend to observe prayer at the time of the rising of the sun nor at its setting, for it rises between the horns of Satan.” (Sahih Muslim)
Signs and Results After Istikhara: How to Know the Outcome
If a matter becomes easy for you after performing Istikhara — doors open, obstacles clear, and your heart feels at ease — it is generally a sign of goodness from Allah. If the path fills with difficulties and your heart pulls away, it may be Allah steering you from that matter.
Contrary to a common belief, you do not have to see a dream for Istikhara to “work.” A dream may come, but it is not required. Most often the answer arrives quietly: as a growing conviction toward one choice, a sense of peace, or the way circumstances unfold after you have acted with trust in Allah.
Istikhara for Marriage and Other Major Decisions
One of the most common reasons people perform Istikhara is for marriage — deciding whether to accept a proposal or move forward with a particular person. The same method applies to any weighty decision: a job offer, relocating, a business venture, or a major purchase. Do your due diligence first (gather information, take advice, weigh the options), then pray Istikhara to ask Allah to make the right path easy and the wrong path distant. Istikhara complements sound decision-making; it does not replace it.
How Many Times Can You Pray Istikhara?
There is no fixed limit. If you do not feel clarity after the first Istikhara, you may repeat it — some scholars mention praying it over several days until your heart settles. The key is sincerity and patience rather than a specific count.
Conclusion
The Istikhara prayer is a beautiful gift from Allah that lets you deepen your connection with Him by seeking His guidance in every matter. All it asks of you is sincerity, faith, and patience while you wait for the answer.
