Our Precious Sprouts - Islamic Regulations for Newborns

براعمنا الثمينة - أحكام إسلامية للمواليد الجدد

A newborn arrives with a full set of Sunnah practices already attached to those first days — and just as many cultural customs mistaken for Sunnah. This closing volume of a four-part marriage and family series sorts one from the other: taḥnīk, naming, ’aqīqah, circumcision and breastfeeding, each traced to its evidence.

Our Precious Sprouts: Islamic Regulations for Newborns by Muhammad al-Jibaly is Book 4 — the concluding volume — of The Muslim Family series, and the one most new parents reach for first. From the moment of birth, Islam attaches a set of Sunnah practices and rulings to a newborn’s earliest days, and this book collects them in one place: what to do, what is merely cultural custom, and what has no basis in the religion at all.

What the Book Covers

Al-Jibaly works through a newborn’s first days in order: taḥnīk (softening a date and rubbing it on the baby’s palate), choosing a name, shaving the head, the ’aqīqah sacrifice, and circumcision — each explained with its ruling, its wisdom, and the evidence behind it. From there the book moves into the ongoing concerns of early childhood: breastfeeding, protecting a child through authentic supplications and ruqyah, clothing and adornment, and the etiquette of birthdays.

A Full Chapter on Names

The book’s most distinctive section is its treatment of Islamic names. It sorts names into recommended, permissible, disliked and prohibited categories, explains kunyahs and nicknames, and closes with two practical appendices: suggested names for boys and girls, and a researched list of Allah’s Beautiful Names (Al-Asma’ al-Husna) drawn from the Qur’an and authentic Sunnah — useful for parents building a name on one of them.

Custom Aside From Sunnah

Much of what circulates in Muslim communities about newborn practices is inherited custom rather than Sunnah. Al-Jibaly is careful throughout to separate the two, so parents can see plainly which practices the religion actually asks of them and which are simply habit.

The Muslim Family Series

Our Precious Sprouts is the fourth and final book in The Muslim Family, al-Jibaly’s four-part series on marriage and family life carrying a couple from courtship through raising their children.
