A Mercy to the Universe

رحمة للعالمين

Mercy is clemency and forbearance; the disposition to forgive; kindness, sympathy, generosity and beneficence. All of these were present in abundance in the character of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. This book works through them one by one, with examples from his life for each.

He was a mercy not only to those who believed but to those who did not — because he invited them out of darkness into the light of true guidance, which is the greatest favour one person can do another. He was a blessing for mankind, not only for the Arabs among whom he was sent, but for people of every race and colour.

The proof of it is what happened to his enemies. His staunchest opponents became his closest followers once the cloud of blind prejudice lifted and they saw, for the first time, the true nature of his character.

How the Book Is Built

It begins with his perfect lineage, his noble upbringing and his fully dedicated worship — the foundations. Then it takes his qualities one at a time:

  • Generosity — and how he behaved toward wealth that passed through his hands
  • Humility — in a man whom an entire nation obeyed
  • Bravery — and where his Companions sheltered when a battle turned
  • Patience — through boycott, bereavement, mockery and physical assault
  • Leadership — consultation, delegation and the treatment of those under him

Each chapter gives examples from his life showing him as the living example of that quality. That structure is the book's advantage over a chronological Seerah: a reader looking for what patience actually looks like in practice can go straight to it.

How It Closes

With the perfection of his life — the Farewell Sermon, and then his death, in which he demonstrated several of these same qualities one final time. Readers often report that the closing chapters are the ones that stay with them.

Who It Is For

Anyone working on his own character who wants a model rather than a principle. Readers who know the events of the Seerah and would like to know the man. Da'wah — the charge that Islam is harsh is answered here by description rather than argument. Study circles and khutbah preparation.
