Imam Az-Zuhri رحمه الله was one of the collectors of hadith. He was born in 50 AH and died in 125 AH. His life and dedication are an indication of the promise of Allah that He will preserve this religion by means of trustworthy people.
Imam Az-Zuhri learned from great personalities, including some of the Sahabah — among them Anas ibn Malik رضي الله عنه. He also studied under the great mountain of knowledge, Sa'eed ibn Al-Musayyib.
That places him at a specific and irreplaceable point in the chain: close enough to have heard from Companions directly, and early enough that what he transmitted reached almost everyone who came after.
One of them, Imam Malik ibn Anas, said: "I have seen so many scholars of old age in Al-Madinah, but everyone was taking from Ibn Shihab" — a remarkable statement from the man who would become the imam of Madinah himself.
Because he is one of the reasons we have a Sunnah at all. Az-Zuhri belongs to the generation that turned oral transmission into recorded scholarship, and understanding what he did makes the preservation of hadith concrete rather than abstract.
