Indeed, 'Abdullah ibn Al-Mubarak رحمه الله can be defined by these beautiful words of the Prophet ﷺ. In this lecture, the speaker brings the attention of the audience to the life of a great scholar.
He was born at the beginning of the Abbasid empire, and he was a memorizer of the Sunnah and a great scholar known for his zuhd — his detachment from the world.
In him, the scholars of his time saw a combination of qualities that were normally found separately. He was a merchant of considerable wealth who gave almost all of it away. He was a scholar of hadith who also went out on campaign. He was known for worship and for generosity in the same breath.
Because it dismantles the excuse. People divide the religious life into categories — the scholar, the worshipper, the man of the world — and use the division to explain why they cannot manage more than one.
Ibn Al-Mubarak managed all of them, and his contemporaries said so. That is why his life was recorded in such detail, and why it is worth two CDs.
