The title is the argument. Islamic history is usually told through its commanders, and the scholars appear as background — when in fact the tradition was carried, corrected and preserved by men who never held anything heavier than a pen.
Qadi 'Iyad ibn Musa al-Yahsubi (476–544 AH) was the leading scholar of the Maliki school in the Muslim West, a judge in Ceuta and later in Granada, and among the most important hadith scholars North Africa produced.
He is best known for Ash-Shifa bi-Ta'rif Huquq al-Mustafa — a work on the rights and standing of the Prophet ﷺ that has been copied, taught and commented on continuously for nine centuries.
That a scholar's authority rests on what he is willing to say when it costs him. He held judicial office, and he lost it — and the reason is instructive about the relationship between knowledge and power in any era.
Anyone interested in the scholars who built the tradition rather than only in its texts. Particularly worth hearing for students, who tend to encounter names in citations without any sense of the lives behind them.
