The name means black wood, and the fragrance sits in the woody-musk family — but it is noticeably sweeter and softer than a straight oud.
Sweet and musky, warm rather than sharp, and long lasting. It has the depth of a wood-based attar without the intensity that makes pure oud difficult for some people.
Light yellow in color.
Men who find Rooh Al Oud too strong, or who want something with more sweetness in it. It is also the easier of the two to wear in an office or a shared space, since it carries less far.
A good first attar for anyone moving across from alcohol-based spray fragrances.
Attar (itr) is concentrated perfume oil without alcohol, which is why it has been the preferred fragrance across the Muslim world for centuries — it can be worn to the masjid and in prayer without question.
Being oil rather than spirit, it behaves differently from a spray. It does not project across a room; it sits close to the skin and lasts far longer, developing as the day goes on. A single roll-on application at Fajr is usually still detectable in the evening.
A small amount on the pulse points — wrists, behind the ears, the base of the throat. Do not rub it in; the friction breaks up the top notes. It is also traditional to apply attar to clothing, where it lasts longer still.
