Burning bakhoor is among the oldest household customs of the Arab world, and it remains standard for Fridays, Eid, Ramadan evenings and the arrival of guests.
Bukhoor or bakhoor is the Arabic name for scented bricks or tablets made from a blend of traditional ingredients — mainly woodchips of oud (the Arabic name for agarwood or aloeswood) soaked in fragrant oils and mixed with resin, ambergris, musk, sandalwood and essential oils.
The chips are burned over charcoal or in an incense burner, and the thick fragrant smoke perfumes the house and the clothing.
A small piece on a lit charcoal disc or in an electric burner is enough for a room. It is traditional to pass the burner around so guests can perfume their clothes, and to scent a room before Jumu'ah or before visitors arrive.
A little goes a long way — a 40g box lasts most households a considerable time.
