Lions living as house cats. Most of them no longer remember there was ever anything else, and the ones who do prefer not to discuss it.

Then a cub starts asking questions.

The Story

Meet Layth — the name means lion — an intelligent and courageous cub seeking truth and adventure. He and his friends decide to dig up the past and begin to ask why their fellow lions behave the way they do.

They start addressing problems that have been buried too deeply for too long. Soon they have a mystery on their paws, and a question of whether they can solve it before they are caught, or stopped before they can even begin.

What It Is Really About

The allegory is not hidden, and it is not heavy-handed either. A community that once had a different character, that gradually adopted the habits of those around it, and that now finds its own history slightly embarrassing — young Muslim readers recognize the shape of it without needing it explained.

Handled as a fable, it prompts thought where a direct lecture would produce resistance.

Who It Is For

Older children and teenagers who want a story rather than a lesson. Reluctant readers, since it moves quickly. Family and classroom discussion — it generates argument, which is the point.
