A Guide to Salat

دليل الصلاة

A Guide to Salat by Muhammad Abdul Karim Saqib fills the gap between English prayer books that are too brief to answer anything and those too detailed to consult quickly. Every practice is traced to authentic Ahadith rather than to one school, following the Prophet's ﷺ instruction: "Pray as you have seen me praying."

English books on Salat tend to fail in one of two directions. Some are so brief they cover the outline and leave every actual question unanswered. Others are so exhaustive that nobody can use them as a reference — you cannot find the ruling you need while standing in a prayer room.

There is a second problem. A good deal of the available material states practices without giving evidence for them, or presents the position of one school without saying so — which leaves a reader from a different background uncertain whether he is being taught the Sunnah or somebody's madhab.

What This Book Does Differently

A Guide to Salat was written specifically to sit between those extremes. It is medium-sized: full enough to cover what a worshipper needs, compact enough to use at home, in the masjid or while traveling.

Its governing principle is the Prophet's ﷺ own instruction, "Pray as you have seen me praying." Where sources disagreed on a point of practice, the compiler went back to the authentic Ahadith and states what the evidence supports. The reader is told not only what to do but on what basis — which is what allows him to pray with confidence in a masjid where the congregation does something slightly different.

Written in Plain English

The language is deliberately simple, which makes it particularly suitable for new Muslims and for anyone who does not read Arabic or Urdu. There is a large literature on prayer in both those languages; there is much less that is genuinely accessible in English, and that gap is what the book was written to close.

Who It Is For

New Muslims learning the prayer from nothing. Converts and second-generation Muslims who learned by imitation as children and have never had it explained. Parents teaching children. Islamic schools and new Muslim classes. Travelers who want a compact reference rather than a library.
