A person ends up resembling the people he spends time with, whether or not he intended to. Islam takes that seriously enough to legislate around it, and this booklet gathers what the texts say.

The Sayings

The author has selected illuminating statements from the Prophet ﷺ, his Companions and the righteous predecessors on friendship — what to look for in a companion, what to avoid, what a friend is owed, and the way character transfers between people who spend time together.

The narrations are unusually direct on this. A man follows the religion of his close friend; sitting with the righteous is likened to sitting with the seller of musk, and sitting with the corrupt to sitting beside a blacksmith's forge. Neither leaves you as you were.

Friendship as a Social Foundation

Where the booklet goes further than most treatments is in what it draws from this. Good friendship is not only a private benefit; it is the material a functioning Muslim society is built out of. A community whose members are genuinely friends — who advise each other honestly, overlook faults, keep confidences and want good for one another — produces justice, equality and love for humanity as a by-product.

A community whose ties are transactional does not, however many institutions it builds. The booklet argues that the door to a civilized Islamic culture opens here, at the level of how people actually treat their friends.

Who It Is For

Young people forming the friendships that will shape their next twenty years. Parents thinking about their children's company. Anyone who has watched a friendship pull them somewhere they did not intend to go. Masjid youth groups and halaqahs, where it works well read a page at a time.

A very good book for those who want to make good friends and be good friends. This book highlights the meaning of true friendship which should be sought by every Muslim. The foundation of every true friendship should be to please Allah [SWT] and the reward for every true friendship is being in paradise together.
