The purpose of our existence is the worship and servitude of Allah: "I have not created jinn kind and mankind except to worship Me" (51:56).
The aim of this worship is primarily achieving Allah's pleasure and, consequently, entry to Paradise. Allah will enter those with whom He is pleased into the Garden — but just as there are levels and degrees to Allah's pleasure, there are levels and degrees to His Paradise. An individual's accumulation of good deeds in this world determines his station in the next.
A lifespan is fixed and short. What is not fixed is how much can be gathered within it — because certain deeds carry multiplied reward, and certain deeds continue producing reward after death.
A night better than a thousand months. A charity whose benefit continues. Knowledge that is still being acted upon. A child who prays for his parent. Each of these turns a limited span into something considerably larger, and each is available to an ordinary person without special circumstances.
