Beyond Mere Christianity

ما وراء المسيحية المجردة

Beyond Mere Christianity answers C.S. Lewis's 1952 classic Mere Christianity — and argues, from current Gospel scholarship, that the authentic words of Jesus عليه السلام invite us beyond the worship of the created to the direct worship of the Creator.

The title carries two meanings, and the author explains both.

The first is a response. C.S. Lewis's Mere Christianity, published in 1952, remains a masterpiece of Christian apologetics and the book most often handed to a doubting reader. It deserves an answer rather than a dismissal, and this book undertakes one.

The second is less obvious. A case can be made, on current and responsible Gospel scholarship, that Jesus عليه السلام was calling his people to a salvation lying beyond the worship of what is merely created — a salvation resting instead on the direct worship of the Creator. On that reading, his authentic words invite the reader past what is conventionally understood as Christianity.

Why It Engages Lewis Directly

Most comparative works argue against a position nobody actually holds. This one takes the strongest modern statement of Christian belief and works through it — which is the only argument worth making to a reader who has found Lewis persuasive.

That is also what makes the book usable with an educated Christian friend. It treats his position seriously enough to have read it properly.

The Author

Dr. Laurence Brown is a practicing ophthalmologist and a revert to Islam, and the author of several works of da'wah — among them The First and Final Commandment, a comprehensive argument for the continuity of revelation, and Bearing True Witness, written for the new convert.

He came to Islam as an adult from a Western professional background, which means he met these arguments in the order his reader will meet them.

Who It Is For

Christians who have read Lewis and want a serious response. Muslims in da'wah among educated Christian friends and colleagues. Students of comparative religion. New Muslims from a Christian background working through what they left and why.
