Taqwiyat-ul-Iman (Strengthening of The Faith)

Taqwiyat-ul-Iman — Strengthening of the Faith — was written by Shah Isma'il Shaheed (1779–1831), grandson of Shah Waliullah Dehlvi and one of the central figures of Islamic revival in the Indian subcontinent. He was killed at Balakot in 1831. The book he left behind is still, two centuries later, among the most widely read and most argued-over works on Tawheed in South Asia.

The Problem the Book Addresses

Shah Isma'il was not writing for non-Muslims. He was writing for Muslims whose belief in Allah's oneness was intact in theory but compromised in practice — through customs absorbed from the surrounding culture and defended as piety. Vows made to other than Allah, appeals to the deceased at shrines, offerings, veneration of the righteous carried past its limit, and rituals with no basis in revelation: each is examined, and each is answered with a Qur'anic verse or an authentic hadith rather than a counter-argument.

Written originally in Urdu for ordinary readers rather than scholars, it is short, direct and quotes constantly. That plainness is why it spread so widely — and why it provoked such strong reaction.
