Amber is the warm one. Where oud is dark and resinous, amber is soft, sweet and enveloping — the note that makes a fragrance feel comfortable rather than striking.
It is among the most universally wearable of the oriental notes, and one of the few that works equally on men and women. If you are buying a fragrance for someone whose taste you do not know, amber is the safest choice in the range.
It also layers well — a good number of people wear amber under oud, which gives the oud a softer base to sit on.
A water perfume sits between an attar and a spray. It is alcohol free like an attar, so it can be worn to the masjid and in prayer without question — but it is water based rather than pure oil, which makes it lighter on the skin and easier to apply generously.
Shake well before use. Natural extracts settle in a water base, and shaking is what returns the fragrance to an even strength.
