The phrase recurs throughout the Quran — gardens beneath which rivers flow — and most Muslims have heard it several thousand times without ever stopping on it.

This lecture stops on it.

What Is Described

Paradise as the texts present it: its gardens and rivers, its levels and the distance between them, the people who will be there, and the greatest reward of all — which the narrations describe as seeing the Face of Allah, before which everything else in Paradise is forgotten.

The Prophet ﷺ conveyed that Allah has prepared for His righteous servants what no eye has seen, no ear has heard, and no heart has conceived.

Why Dwelling on It Is Not Escapism

Because it is the thing every act of worship is aimed at, and almost nobody thinks about it concretely.

A person who prays, fasts and gives without a vivid sense of what he is working toward is running on discipline alone, and discipline runs out. The early Muslims spoke about Paradise constantly — not to distract themselves from this life, but because it was what made the sacrifices of this life obviously worthwhile.

Who It Is For

Anyone whose practice has become a set of obligations discharged. It also does real good for someone in grief, which is when the subject stops being abstract.
