Restoring the Honour of Muslim Women (DVD)

This talk discusses how Islam restores the honor that has been stripped from women by the unreasonable expectations, demands and mores of contemporary society. It also advises Muslim women to renew their confidence in Islam and in their place and role in society, and gives them reasons to proudly hold on to their identity.

The Argument It Makes

Not that Muslim women should endure the modern world, but that the modern world has taken something from women and Islam gives it back.

That is a reversal of the usual framing, in which Islam is on the defensive and contemporary society is the neutral standard. The talk declines that framing and asks instead what today's expectations actually demand of women, and at what cost.

Why Confidence Is the Theme

Because knowledge alone does not produce it. A Muslim woman may know exactly why she covers and still feel apologetic explaining it, because the surrounding assumption is that she is the one who needs to justify herself.

The lecture works on that directly, which is why it is aimed at Muslim women rather than at their critics.
