Where the Title Comes From
The Prophet ﷺ said: "Indeed among men there are people who are a key to goodness and a barrier to all evil." That single narration is the entire premise of the book — not that a person merely does good, but that his presence causes good to happen through others as well.
Why the Book Opens With Knowledge
Beneficial knowledge is derived from the Book of Allah and the Sunnah of His Messenger ﷺ. Knowledge is the foundation, and it is essential for the servant to acquire it in order to become a key to good — because a person without beneficial knowledge cannot distinguish between the keys to good and the keys to evil, between truth and falsehood, between Sunnah and Bid'ah, between guidance and misguidance. As it has been said: "How can one ward off that which he does not know he is warding?"
Allah says: "Say (O Muhammad): 'This is my way; I invite unto Allah with sure knowledge.'" [Surah Yusuf 12:108]
And: "Is he who walks without seeing on his face more rightly guided, or he who walks on a Straight Way?" [Surah Al-Mulk 67:22]
And: "Shall he then who knows that what has been revealed unto you from your Lord is the truth be like him who is blind? But it is only the men of understanding that pay heed." [Surah Ar-Ra'd 13:19]
And: "Say: 'Are those who know equal to those who know not?'" [Surah Az-Zumar 39:9]
The Messenger ﷺ is reported by Al-Bayhaqi to have said: "Whoever goes out seeking to learn some beneficial knowledge, Allah will open a door of Paradise for him."
