Interaction with the Scholars is a guide teaching Muslims the correct Islamic etiquette (adab) of dealing with the scholars of Islam, according to the Qur'an, the authentic Sunnah, and the understanding of the righteous predecessors (as-Salaf as-Salih).

Written by Shaykh Muhammad bin 'Umar bin Salim Bazmul.

Why This Needs Saying Now

Because the relationship has changed. A Muslim once knew the scholars of his own town and learned in their presence; today he encounters dozens of them as names attached to clips, with no sense of their standing, their teachers, or the context of what he is hearing.

The result is a culture in which scholars are ranked, compared, dismissed and attacked by people who have never studied under any of them — frequently over a single statement taken without its setting.

What the Book Establishes

How to benefit from a scholar rather than merely quote him. What respect is owed and what it does not require — since deference is not the same as infallibility, and no scholar claims the latter.

How to handle disagreement between scholars without taking it as license to discard both. How to ask a question properly. And how to speak about a scholar you disagree with, which is where most of the damage is done.

Who It Is For

Students of knowledge, and anyone who follows Islamic teaching online — which is now nearly everyone, and which is precisely the audience the classical adab was never written for.
