Regular use helps prevent conjunctivitis and other viral eye infections. Surma powder (antimony) is generally used for a cool, refreshing feeling in the eyes. Glass makes the powder packed too tight which will cause it to splinter the wooden applicator in order to break through the surface to coat it with and apply.
The wood and container are strange

The wood applicator splintered because the kohl is packaged so near because of the glass, and I needed to break pass the surface of the powder to coat the wood in the kohl, now I cannot put it near my eye feeling safe and its not comfortable at all. It's because the glass is not shaped well, that's why the kohl is packed so tight and close, and it is hard to collect onto the applicator. The kohl itself is nice, but the packaging and applicator is not, so I need to buy from somewhere else. Even the one I bought for my sister all just blasted out when she opened it simply because it was laying on its side at some point.
