Al-Bidayah wan-Nihayah by Imam Isma'il ibn Kathir Ad-Dimashqi (d. 774 AH) is among the most authoritative histories in Islamic scholarship — and at full length it is a project rather than a purchase.
What the Abridgement Preserves
The two things that made the original authoritative: Ibn Kathir's hadith-based method, and his critical approach to historical reporting. He was a scholar of hadith as well as a historian, and he applied the standards of the first discipline to the material of the second — which is why his history is trusted in a field where fabrication accumulates freely.
What Is Covered
From the creation of the world through the lives of the Prophets, the biography of Muhammad ﷺ, the Companions, the fitan (trials), and the major events of Muslim civilization into the Umayyad and Abbasid eras.
The tahdhib presents this in a more organized and readable arrangement than the original allows, which is what makes it usable in a madrasah or a university course.

تهذيب البداية والنهاية للحافظ إسماعيل بن كثير الدمشقي رحمه الله (ت ٧٧٤ هـ)، في خمسة مجلدات.
و«البداية والنهاية» من أوثق كتب التاريخ الإسلامي، وهو بطوله مشروع لا كتاب يُقتنى.
وقد حفظ هذا التهذيب ما به صار الأصل حجّة: منهجه الحديثي، ونظره النقدي في الأخبار. فقد كان ابن كثير محدّثًا كما كان مؤرخًا، فأجرى على المادة التاريخية ميزان نقد الحديث — ولذلك وُثّق كتابه في بابٍ تكثر فيه الروايات الموضوعة.
ويشمل الكتاب بدء الخلق، وقصص الأنبياء، وسيرة النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم، والصحابة رضي الله عنهم، والفتن، وأحداث الدولتين الأموية والعباسية.
وقد رُتّبت المادة ترتيبًا أيسر مما في الأصل، فصلح للتدريس في المدارس والجامعات. خمسة مجلدات بخط عربي واضح وتجليد متين.
