Almost every Muslim child memorizes these two surahs before he can read. They are short, they come at the very end of the Qur'an, and they are among the first things taught.

Very few are told what they mean, or why the Prophet ﷺ recited them every night before sleeping and after every prayer.

What It Explains

Both surahs, verse by verse, at a level a child follows — what seeking refuge actually is, what is being sought refuge from in each, and why these two are paired.

The practical result is worth stating: a child who understands them recites them differently. He stops saying two short surahs by rote and starts asking Allah for something specific, which is what they were given for.
