A Taste of Patience is the real-life account of Mohamed Eid Al-Araimi, an Omani writer whose life was altered permanently on a predawn drive to the oil fields where he worked, when his car struck a camel on the road. The accident left him with severe physical disabilities. This book is his account of what came after.

Al-Araimi defines patience two ways in this account: first as the bitter experience itself, and second as the ability to actually tolerate that experience and turn the misfortune into something of value. That second definition is what the book demonstrates rather than argues — where the accident closed off his physical movement, it opened a career in writing that let him reach readers he never would have otherwise. As Egyptian writer Yousef El-Sharoni put it, the accident that paralyzed his body is also what unleashed his writing talent.

About the Author

Mohamed Eid Al-Araimi was born in 1954 in Wadi al-Mur in eastern Oman, traveled widely across the Arabian Gulf, and earned a bachelor’s degree in industrial engineering in the United States before the accident that changed the course of his life. After extensive physical rehabilitation, he returned to his professional career and went on to write the novel Mark of Chain, the novella Between Desert and Sea, and a story collection titled Rainbow, alongside an Arabic translation of George Orwell’s Animal Farm.
