In reality, the Muslim Ummah does not realize that the Day of Judgment is near. We take things for granted and often fail to see the many signs all around us. Muslims have also, in general, failed to learn the lessons of the past.
Because a seed is planted long before anything is visible, and nothing about the ground suggests urgency at the time. The farmer acts on knowledge of a season he cannot yet see.
That is exactly the position of a believer with respect to the Last Day — and it explains why the correct response to knowing it is coming is not fear but planting.
The signs are usually discussed as a catalog: this will happen, then this, then this. Cataloguing them produces interest and no action.
Treating them practically asks a different question — given that these are the conditions, what should a person be doing about it this week? That reframing is the whole value of the lecture.
Anyone who finds the subject fascinating and has never let it change anything. Also good listening for those preoccupied with predicting the timing, which is precisely what the Prophet ﷺ redirected his Companions away from.
