Muslims in the West build masajid first and then wonder why the community does not hold together. This lecture argues that a masjid is the beginning of the work rather than the end of it.

What a Village Means

The image is deliberate. A village is not a building; it is a set of relationships and institutions dense enough that a person's whole life can be lived inside it — where children are educated, where disputes are settled, where the elderly are cared for and where a family in difficulty is noticed.

A congregation that meets for Jumu'ah and disperses is not that, however large the building.

What It Takes

Schooling. Marriage support. Financial cooperation. Care for elders and for converts, who are frequently the most isolated people in any masjid. Youth provision that exists on ordinary weekday evenings rather than at Eid. And leadership willing to take responsibility for outcomes rather than for events.

Why It Matters Now

Because the alternative is visible in every established community: a generation raised in the masjid that quietly stops attending in its twenties. The institutions are what make staying the path of least resistance rather than the harder choice.

Who It Is For

Masjid boards, community organizers, imams, and anyone frustrated with a local community and unsure what to actually do about it.
